Real Valladolid Club de Futbol, founded on June 20, 1928, is a professional football club based in Valladolid, in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon, Spain. The club plays its home matches at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla, a 27,846-capacity stadium named after the famous Romantic poet and built for the 1982 FIFA World Cup, during which it hosted matches including the Italy-Poland semi-final. Valladolid has spent over 40 seasons in La Liga, establishing itself as a respected top-flight competitor despite never winning a major trophy. The club's most notable achievement came in the 1989-90 season when it reached the Copa del Rey final, losing to Barcelona. Valladolid also reached the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals in the 1990-91 season. In 2018, Brazilian former international Ronaldo Nazario acquired a controlling stake in the club, becoming its president and bringing international attention to the organization. Under Ronaldo's ownership, Valladolid returned to La Liga but has experienced fluctuating fortunes. The club's purple and white home kit is distinctive within Spanish football, earning them the nickname 'Los Blanquivioletas.' Valladolid's youth system has produced several notable players who went on to successful careers at larger clubs.
