Rayo Vallecano
Los Franjirrojos
Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, founded on May 29, 1924, is a professional football club based in the Vallecas neighborhood of Madrid, Spain. The club plays its home matches at the Estadio de Vallecas, a compact 14,708-capacity ground that is renowned for creating one of the most intimidating atmospheres in Spanish football despite its modest size. Rayo has spent over 20 seasons in La Liga, with its most successful period coming in the 1999-2000 season when the club qualified for the UEFA Europa League under coach Juande Ramos. The club is deeply rooted in its working-class Vallecas community and is known for its left-wing, politically engaged fanbase, making it unique in Spanish football culture. Rayo's famous Bukaneros ultras group is one of the most recognizable supporter movements in Europe. The club has won the Segunda Division twice and reached the Copa del Rey semi-finals. Under coach Andoni Iraola, Rayo enjoyed a strong return to La Liga in the 2021-22 season, competing effectively against bigger-budget clubs. The club's white kit with a red sash, known as the franjirrojo, is one of the most distinctive in Spanish football.
