Montpellier Herault Sport Club is a French professional football club based in Montpellier, Occitanie. Founded in 1919, the club plays at the Stade de la Mosson, a 19,943-seat venue in the southern French city. Montpellier achieved one of the greatest underdog stories in French football history by winning the Ligue 1 title in the 2011-12 season under manager Rene Girard, led by the prolific goalscoring of Olivier Giroud who netted 21 league goals that campaign. This remarkable achievement came against the backdrop of the financial dominance of Paris Saint-Germain, who were heavily favored to win the title. The club has won the Coupe de France once, in 1929, and the Coupe de la Ligue in 1992. Montpellier is known for its strong academy, which has produced notable players including Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Remy Cabella. The club operates with a modest budget relative to many Ligue 1 competitors but has consistently maintained its top-flight status through shrewd management and a commitment to developing young talent from the Occitanie region.
