Las Palmas

UD Las Palmas, founded on August 22, 1949, is a professional football club based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands, Spain. The club plays its home matches at the Estadio de Gran Canaria, a 32,400-capacity venue that opened in 2003, replacing the historic Estadio Insular. Las Palmas is the westernmost top-flight football club in Europe, located over 1,700 kilometers from mainland Spain, giving the club a unique geographical identity. The club enjoyed its golden era in the late 1960s and early 1970s, finishing as La Liga runners-up in the 1968-69 season under coach Luis Molowny and reaching the Copa del Rey semi-finals multiple times. Las Palmas has spent 36 seasons in La Liga throughout its history. The club is renowned for its distinctive Canary Island-style attacking football and its passionate fanbase that fills the stadium despite the island's remote location. After a 22-year absence from the top flight, Las Palmas returned to La Liga in 2023. The club maintains a fierce island derby rivalry with Tenerife.
