RC Celta de Vigo, commonly known as Celta Vigo, was founded on August 23, 1923, following the merger of two local clubs in the Galician city of Vigo. The club plays its home matches at the Estadio Municipal de Balaidos, which has a capacity of approximately 29,000 spectators. Despite never winning La Liga or the Copa del Rey, Celta Vigo has established itself as a respected top-flight club, reaching the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals in the 2016-17 season and famously qualifying for the Round of 16. Celta's most celebrated era came in the early 2000s when the team, featuring players like Alexander Mostovoi, Valery Karpin, and Benni McCarthy, qualified for the UEFA Champions League in the 2003-04 season. The club has finished as Copa del Rey runners-up on three occasions, most recently in 2001. Celta maintains a fierce Galician derby rivalry with Deportivo de La Coruna. The club's sky blue home kit has earned them the nickname 'Los Celestes.' Celta's youth academy has produced talents including Iago Aspas, the club's all-time leading scorer.
